FAQ

Pennsylvania homeowners pay an average of 20.92¢/kWh — well above the national average — and that rate has been rising. Pennsylvania doesn't offer a property or sales tax exemption for solar, but its SREC market gives homeowners a second income stream on top of bill savings: every megawatt-hour your system generates earns an Alternative Energy Credit you can sell. With Qcells factory-direct pricing and a 25-year warranty, that combination makes Pennsylvania one of the stronger financial cases for solar even without a state rebate.
Yes. Pennsylvania's electric distribution companies must offer net metering to residential systems up to 50 kW, on a first-come, first-served basis. Excess generation is credited against future usage at the full retail rate, and any credit remaining at year-end is paid out at the utility's price-to-compare rate. Pennsylvania also allows virtual meter aggregation, letting a single system's credits apply across multiple meters.
An SREC (Solar Renewable Energy Credit, called an Alternative Energy Credit or AEC in Pennsylvania) is generated for every megawatt-hour your solar system produces, tracked through the PJM-GATS registry. Utilities buy these credits to meet Pennsylvania's Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards, and homeowners can sell theirs on the open market — pricing moves with supply and demand, but it's income on top of what you already save on your electric bill.
No. Unlike some states, Pennsylvania charges standard sales tax on solar equipment and does not exempt the added home value from property tax assessment. This is a real cost to plan for — we build it into your quote up front rather than leaving it as a surprise.
Right now, Pennsylvania doesn't have a statewide law guaranteeing solar access the way some states do. A bill (HB 1239) that would stop HOAs from banning solar on individually owned roofs passed the PA House in 2026 but is still pending in the state Senate — it isn't law yet. If your property has an HOA, we recommend checking your association's rules before signing a contract; our consultants can help you navigate that conversation.
